What are they?
They are Rhythm instruments made from halves of the seed pod of the
Royal Poinciana tree.
They are played like a Guido , the South American Instrument made from
a Gourd that has grooves carved in it and a stick is dragged across the grooves. ( Like a mini washboard.)
They were a big hit when we put them out in our gallery. Nobody could believe the BIG sound that you can achieve with such a small instrument.
Besides being good for percussionists they are a wonderful Meditation instrument. Grip pressure and cupping the hand that holds the scratch changes the tone. I also have used 1/2 a coconut shell under the scratch for resonator. Experiment for yourself.
